Lawrence A. Lavery, DPM, MPH
Dr. Lawrence A. Lavery, medical professor, noted researcher, international
lecturer and inventor, is a world renowned expert in amputation prevention
in high-risk diabetics, an epidemiologist of diabetic-related amputations
and a leading specialist in the use of footwear and insoles to prevent
re-ulceration in high-risk diabetics.
Educated on the undergraduate level at Indiana University in Bloomington
where he received his B.S. in business, Dr. Lavery received his DPM
(Doctor of Podiatric Medicine) from Dr. William Scholl College of
Podiatric Medicine in Chicago, Illinois, in 1988. In 1992, he received
his MPH (Master of Public Health) in Public Health Epidemiology from
the University of Texas Health Science Center, School of Public Health,
in Houston, Texas. Between 1988 and 1990, he was a resident in podiatric
medicine and surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center
in San Antonio. Following that, he became the Chief Resident from
1992 to 1993.
Currently, Dr. Lavery is a Associate Professor at Loyola University
Medical Center in Maywood, Illinois, in the department of Orthopaedic
Surgery and Rehabilitation and is the Staff Podiatrist (WOC) at the
Edward Hines Jr. Veterans Administration Hospital in Maywood, Illinois.
Dr. Lavery is an Associate Professor with tenure at the University
of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Department of Orthopedic
Surgery. Between 1997 and 1998, he was the Staff Podiatrist at the
Audie L. Murphy Memorial Veterans Administration Hospital in San Antonio,
Texas. And between 1991 and 1992, Dr. Lavery was a Research Fellow
at the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons in San Antonio,
Texas. A distinguished medical researcher who is often called upon
by industry to conduct independent clinical research of the highest
level, Dr. Lavery has published over 100 peer reviewed papers, and
is the author of the chapter on "The Diabetic's Foot" in
Clinics in Podiatric Medicine and Surgery, published by W.B. Saunders,
January 1995.
Dr. Lavery continues to develop highly specialized educational courses
ranging from integrating new approaches in the treatment of diabetic
foot ulcers to research programs for podiatry students at the University
of Texas. Since 1992, Dr. Lavery has been actively engaged in the
instruction of postdoctoral fellows, Ph.D. candidates and medical
students.
Dr. Lavery has received numerous honors and awards for medical research
and writing. In addition to a prestigious medical resume, Dr. Lavery
was recently granted a patent for an apparatus and method for monitoring
temperatures on the plantar aspects of the human foot and other vital
health information (U.S. Patent 6,398,740B1 June 4, 2002).
Lawrence Lavery is considered one of the world's leading experts in
diabetic foot complications (podiatric medicine and diabetic-related
issues). He resides in Maywood, Illinois with his wife Karen and their
three sons: Connor, Matt and Ryan.
