Michellie Jones
Michellie
Jones is the world's number-one female triathlete. She is the gold
standard against which all other women triathletes are judged... and
she is a hard act to follow. That's what most other triathletes do
- follow her, because she has never finished less than third in any
race she has entered. When she does not win, it's bigger news than
if she does. In the world of triathletes, other women contestants
judge how well they have done by how close or how far behind Michellie
they inevitably finish.
Michellie has been running, biking and swimming since 1991 when she
became the Triathlon Rookie of the Year. In 1992, 1993, 1998, 1999
and 2000, she was ranked the Triathlete of the Year. She has appeared
on over 35 magazine covers, and she is living proof that performance
and looks really count.
Born in Fairfield, Australia, she is a professional triathlete. She
received her diploma in education from Wollondong University in 1990.
Today, Michellie resides in both Carlsbad, California and Sydney,
Australia. As Triathlete Magazine observed in its August 2000 edition,
Michellie Jones is, "... the most consistently great female distance
runner in the sport's history and may also be one of the smartest.
Michellie Jones has maintained a decade of results by doing a third
of the training other Aussie women do, getting significant rest and
saying no to junk mileage."
When Michellie returned to her homeland of Australia in 2000 to compete
for the Australian team in the first-ever female Olympic triathlon,
she came into the competition as the world's greatest. Placing as
silver medalist, she secured her place in the history of the sport
which she had been instrumental in helping to establish since it started
in Australia in 1988.
Women's Sport Magazine, in its pre-Sydney Olympics edition, noted,
"... Jones, a tall, lithe blonde, is always ready to offer a
warm, friendly smile and a joke about. She is, by all accounts, a
very gutsy and determined competitor. She is strong in every respect:
physically, mentally and emotionally."
When Michellie Jones appears at the 2002 Outdoor Retailers' Show in
Anaheim, California, she will be there as the undisputed women's triathlete
champion in the world, and a professional athlete who understands
that performance is important, and so, too, are great looks!
